CNN Threatens Further Legal Action Over Air Force One Access
The network demands the White House restore travel privileges for its journalists or face a return to court.

CNN has issued a formal warning to the Trump administration, threatening to initiate new legal proceedings if the White House continues to block its reporters from traveling aboard Air Force One. In a letter addressed to the Department of Justice, legal counsel for the network demanded that the administration confirm by Thursday that it will cease these restrictions, which CNN characterizes as unlawful retaliation for its news coverage.
This latest dispute stems from an ongoing conflict regarding media access that began in September, when the administration initially barred CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House grounds. While a federal judge subsequently issued a preliminary injunction that restored the journalists' access to the executive complex, that ruling did not explicitly cover participation in the presidential press pool for travel. Consequently, the network argues that it has been systematically excluded from its scheduled turns to cover the president on the road.
CNN’s attorney, Theodore J. Boutrous Jr., emphasized that the network has maintained consistent access to the president’s travel and the Oval Office for over four decades. He argued that these spaces serve as vital forums for public information, noting that the president has historically fielded thousands of questions in these settings compared to the limited interactions occurring in the formal briefing room. The network contends that its exclusion is a form of discriminatory interference with its professional duties as part of the five-major-network video pool.
In response to the allegations, a White House official maintained that journalists do not possess a constitutional right to access sensitive facilities like the presidential aircraft or the Oval Office. The administration has defended its stance by suggesting that proximity is a privilege, not a right, and has previously justified such restrictions by criticizing the accuracy of the reporting from the affected outlets. As of now, the administration has not provided a formal explanation for the specific exclusions of CNN reporters from recent trips to locations including Georgia, Florida, and Tennessee.
With the deadline for a response approaching, the network has signaled its readiness to escalate the matter back to the judiciary. CNN maintains that it is prepared to pursue the case as long as necessary to protect its rights, framing the struggle as a fundamental issue of press freedom and the public's right to receive information about the presidency.
