Blackstone and Canadian Pension Funds Secure $3.1 Billion Stake in LNG Canada

A consortium spearheaded by the U.S. asset management firm Blackstone has finalized a deal to invest US$3.1 billion into the LNG Canada project. The investment secures a 49.9% non-controlling stake in a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corporation, which holds the Japanese firm's 15% interest in the massive liquefaction facility located in Kitimat, British Columbia.

The investor group features several prominent Canadian institutional players, including the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPP Investments), the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS), the Investment Management Corporation of Ontario (IMCO), and the Public Sector Pension Investment Board (PSP Investments). This capital injection arrives as the project moves forward with its ambitious Phase 2 expansion.

Once the expansion is fully operational, the facility is expected to double its production capacity to 28 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas per annum. This growth trajectory positions the terminal as one of the most substantial energy infrastructure assets globally, designed to address increasing international demand for natural gas.

Despite the change in ownership structure, Mitsubishi Corporation will remain the controlling partner of its interest and will continue to retain its full share of the plant's LNG supply. The transaction is viewed by the participants as a strategic move to support long-term energy infrastructure, though the deal has drawn criticism from environmental advocates who argue that such capital should be directed toward renewable energy initiatives.

While Blackstone reported the transaction value at $3.1 billion, Mitsubishi noted a valuation of approximately $1.6 billion, reflecting potential differences in financing structures or accounting definitions. Regardless of the valuation metrics, the deal underscores the continued interest of major global investors in Canadian energy projects as the country seeks to expand its export capabilities.
