Alexia Putellas Leads London City Lionesses to Opening WSL Victory

The London City Lionesses kicked off their Women's Super League campaign with a statement victory, defeating Manchester United 2-1 at the Copperjax Community Stadium. The match marked the highly anticipated debut of global superstar Alexia Putellas, who captained the side in front of a sell-out crowd. Under the watchful eye of club owner Michele Kang, the hosts demonstrated their ambition for the new season with a disciplined performance.

The scoring opened early in the ninth minute when a header from Alanna Kennedy forced an unfortunate own goal from Manchester United's Julia Zigiotti. Despite the pressure, London City maintained control for much of the contest, effectively neutralizing United's attacking threats while showcasing their own tactical depth. The home side’s high press proved particularly effective in disrupting the visitors' rhythm throughout the first half.

As the match entered the final stages, Danielle van de Donk secured the result with a moment of individual brilliance. Her clever flick in the 82nd minute doubled the lead, providing the Lionesses with a comfortable cushion. Although Manchester United substitute Simi Awujo managed to pull one back with a stoppage-time strike, it served only as a late consolation for the visitors.

While Putellas had a relatively quiet debut, her presence on the pitch anchored a new-look squad that included several high-profile additions. Head coach Eder Maestre expressed satisfaction with the team's foundation, noting that the victory provides a strong platform for the challenges ahead. For London City, the win serves as a promising start to an era defined by significant investment and high expectations.
